As the summer heat intensifies in the summer months of Arizona, staying hydrated becomes a critical aspect of maintaining health and safety on our job sites. Heavy civil construction often involves long hours under the sun, strenuous physical activity, and exposure to diverse weather conditions making proper hydration not just a recommendation, but a necessity. Dehydration can lead to serious health issues such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Every employee-owner needs to prioritize their hydration throughout the workday.
Hydration begins before you even set foot on the job site. Start your day with a full glass of water and continue to drink small amounts regularly. Aim to consume at least 8-10 cups of water daily, more if the weather is particularly hot or if you are engaged in intense physical labor. Remember that beverages like coffee and soda can contribute to dehydration, so it’s best to limit their intake. Instead, opt for water or electrolyte-rich drinks that can help replenish the minerals lost through sweat. Additionally, make use of the hydration stations provided around the site and take scheduled breaks to cool down and rehydrate.
Our commitment to safety extends beyond providing the necessary tools and equipment; it includes fostering a culture of health and wellness. Supervisors and team leads should encourage and remind their crews to take hydration breaks regularly. Look out for signs of dehydration among your peers, such as dizziness, fatigue, headache, confusion, or dark-colored urine, and address them immediately. Please notify supervision or the Rummel safety team, if you or another employee-owner start experiencing signs of a heat-related illness. By prioritizing hydration, we can maintain a healthy workforce, enhance productivity, and ensure everyone returns home safely at the end of the day. Together, let’s build not just a safer job site, but also a healthier one.
